It is not coming from your ears
The sound you hear is real. Your brain is genuinely producing a signal. What has been misunderstood is where that signal starts.
Tinnitus is generated in the brain, in a small structure in the brainstem called the dorsal cochlear nucleus. When hearing changes, even slightly, that region can begin firing without an outside sound to explain it. You perceive ringing, buzzing, or hissing.
This is why a sound machine can cover the noise for a while without changing anything underneath. Masking sits on top of the signal. Once we know where the signal is generated, treatment can be aimed at that level instead.
How the device works
Lenire® is an FDA-authorized prescription device, granted De Novo authorization by the FDA in March 2023 to temporarily relieve the symptoms of tinnitus in adults.

The research
Lenire® was studied in a clinical trial published in a peer reviewed medical journal, and the device came through the FDA De Novo pathway in March 2023 on the strength of that work.
Independent clinics in different parts of the country have since published their own real world findings in patients treated outside a controlled trial.
The pattern of results has held up across different cities and different clinicians. That is the part worth paying attention to, because in medicine findings usually weaken once a treatment leaves the trial setting.
What was shown applies to adults with tinnitus of moderate or greater severity. Your own audiogram and history decide whether the evidence base is relevant to your case, which is what the consultation is for.
